Context of Practice: Designers (Typography)

For our last studio task for Richard before our practical sessions begin, we must create a list of 5 designers that relate to each context of practice lecture we have had throughout first year on the programme. We have 9 topics; modernism, postmodernism, street art/graffiti, film, high culture vs. low culture, typography and the history of type, media specificity, advertising and communication.

Typography / History of Type

Sasha Prood
Sasha Prood grew up just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA and trained at Carnegie Mellon's School of Design. In addition to freelancing full-time, she is currently taking a course in typography. Although not very well known I find her uniques, feminine style and approach to typography very inspiring. She is currently working on New York, USA. She creates typography, illustrations, patterns and graphics using a range of different media. Thematically her work leans towards organic, natural and scientific with vintage, utilitarian and childhood influences. She creates work from anything including logos to posters to apparel graphics.

Lander Janssens
Lander Janssens of graphic design company 'Grapplica' specialises in abstract typographic designs made with letraset. I am really looking forward to learning letraset as I know a few of the second years who produce some great work with it. His work is both balanced and uncontrived. His work also has a very tactile texture given by the use of letraset throughout his body of designs. He is currently based in Brussels, Belgium.

Mike Perry
As a designer and artist working in a variety of mediums, including—but not limited to—books, magazines, newspapers, clothing, drawing, painting, and illustration, Mike Perry is compelled by the ways in which the hand-drawn informs and deepens contemporary visual culture. Perry works regularly for a number of editorial and commercial clients including Apple, The New York TimesDwell, Target, Urban Outfitters, eMusic, and Nike. In 2004, he was chosen as one of Step magazine’s 30 under 30, and, in 2007, as a “Groundbreaking Illustrator” by Computer Arts Projects. In 2008, he received Print magazine’s New Visual Artist award and the ADC Young Guns 6. His work has been exhibited around the world including the 2 recent, solo shows in Tokyo, Japan, We are the Infinity of Each Other and B Gallery and Color, Shapes and Infinity at Public Image 3d Gallery.

Jean François Porchez
Founded in 1994, Typofonderie is an independent digital type foundry in France, designing, manufacturing and distributing a selection of high quality typefaces for adventurous digital typographers. I really like designs by Jean François Porchez, his simplistic designs look really effective and over powering. I instantly fell in love with the work being produced over in France.

Jean-Francois Porchez has received the Morisawa international type design award twice, for Angie in 1990 and Apolline in 1994. In 1995, he became the designer responsible for the new typeface for Le Monde, a leading French national newspaper. He has recently completed Parisine, for the signage of the Paris metro system, and Anisette, an all caps face created in the spirit of Cassandre and French poster designers of the 1930s. In 1997, he finished Le Monde, a large family of four styles: Le Monde Journal, Le Monde Sans, Le Monde Livre, Le Monde Courrier and he established his own foundry to distribute it exclusively, the Porchez Typofonderie. Porchez, born in 1964, received his graduate education at the Atelier National de Création Typographique in 1991. After receiving his degree he worked for three years as type director at the Paris based Dragon Rouge, a large corporate identity and packaging firm. He now works at home in the Paris suburb of Malakoff. He teaches typography and writes as a journalist. He is a member of Rencontres Internationales de Lure, Association Typographique Internationale (national chairperson) and Typographic Circle.
