Context of Practice: Designers (Advertising)

For our last studio task for Richard before our practical sessions begin, we must create a list of 5 designers that relate to each context of practice lecture we have had throughout first year on the programme. We have 9 topics; modernism, postmodernism, street art/graffiti, film, high culture vs. low culture, typography and the history of type, media specificity, advertising and communication.

Prologue
Prologue functions as a collective of designers, filmmakers and artists. It is a body with many parts, each performing a unique function, and each supporting the whole. We encourage, challenge and sharpen one another in an effort to create work that is both communicative and inspirational. It is an approach toward design that has been tested and proven over the years, but we remain open to new ideas, methodologies and perspectives. We are proud of our accomplishments, but not content. We especially value our collaborative relationships with our client partners. We strive to support them creatively and help them tell their stories. We believe that when talented individuals work in concert with patience and passion great work is the result.

Change the Thought

Changethethought was originally founded in 2002 by then Graphic Designer Christopher Cox. It originally harbored his personal exploits as a designer and artist. When Ctt was first created Cox was busy blogging for Design Is Kinky and working regularly as both a fulltime designer and illustrator while also taking numerous freelance projects. After several years of blogging and moving around the country working as a Flash Developer, Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Motion Design Director, Art Director and exhibiting artist Chris settled in Denver, Colorado.

In 2006 he decided to launch his own blog which eventually gathered an audience from around the world. Still feeling like there was yet more to do he decided to form a studio. Only a few months into launching the new studio venture he was joined by his now partner and Executive Creative Director Mike Slane. After working up and down the West Coast for agencies like Shilo, Exopolis and Motion Theory, Slane immediately brought a level of expertise to the studio which allowed Changethethought to partake in new and exciting project work.

Christopher Cox has spent the last 12 years working in practically every facet of the creative industry. His artwork has been exhibited internationally. After a lot of moving around he spent a better part of the mid-2000′s as an Art Director for Cactus Communications. While under the employ of Cactus he cut his teeth on everything from broadcast advertising to helping art direct award winning campaigns for Colorado Dept. of Health and the Colorado Lottery. His work has made the pages of Print, Advanced Photoshop Magazine, Computer Arts, Communication Arts and been recognized by the One Show, The FWA, Macromedia Site of the Day, The Cannes Film Festival, South By Southwest Interactive, The Denver Art Director’s Guild and several others.

After 4 fulfilling years at Cactus, Chris decided it was time to start his own studio with a focus on the things he loves, graphic design, motion design, 3D, illustration, typography and advertising. He now lives happily in Denver, Colorado with his wonderful wife and bubbly little son. He is thankful everyday for the chance to do what he loves.

Mike Slane has spent time working with some of the most talented people in the world of motion design. Originally accepting an internship at what was then a small burgeouning studio called Motion Theory, Slane was quickly jumped into working on motion projects for some of the biggest clients in the industry. He was there at the beginning of what has now become one of the best agencies in the business. Afterward he moved onto work at another cutting-edge studio bridging the gap between web and motion called Exopolis.

A change in direction for his family’s sake spawned a move to Colorado where at a house party he first ran into Christopher Cox. He then decided once more to return to California and work with another amazing group of people at Shilo. Then Colorado called him home once more except for this time he decided it was his time to begin his own studio along with Chris. Mike is one of the hardest working people in the industry and he is also a loving family man who enjoys spending time with his wife and two beautiful rambunctious daughters.
